BACKYARD GARDENING, PHILIPPINES
Host Organization: International Association for Transformation www.iatcan.org
Presently, many villagers in the Northern Philippines are unable to use the fertile and arable land around their homes because of pigs and other wild animals wandering freely in search of food. Most families have one or two small rice paddies, but combined with ecologically harmful slash and burn farming, many do not have an adequate source of food nor a reliable income.
This venture with the International Association for Transformation (IAT) will serve to develop the use of the fertile land adjacent to the villagers' huts in planting nutritious vegetables with sustainability and long-term development in mind.
The goals of this venture are to:
- Improve sanitation through preventing animals from surrounding the homes.
- Supplement diets with nutritious food that will improve health and stave off infections for the children and villagers alike.
- Improve children's capacity to go to school.
- Generate income for families through the sale of extra produce to other villagers.
- Other villagers realizing the benefits of back yard gardens would be motivated to create their own.
This program will be introduced to selected villages at the end of October 2008. Workshops and training sessions will be conducted for the selected families in all aspects of back yard gardening.
21 families – or approximately 168 people – are the direct beneficiaries of this venture, with the potential for hundreds of additional villagers benefiting from access to excess produce and opportunities to increase awareness concerning organic gardening, nutrition and sanitation.
End Poverty Now is honoured to be working with this joint venture with the International Association for Transformation.
