CLASSROOM RESOURCES
End
Poverty Now has a wide variety of classroom resources and activities
available to help guide students to their own understanding of what
poverty really is, how it manifests itself, and what they can do to end
it.
LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES
An
array of activities that help students consider what poverty means to
those who live it, what prejudices about the impoverished they may hold,
and what causes poverty.
SITUATION SLIPS
Twelve
half page descriptions of various situations where people face
limitations that cause or maintain poverty, including a worksheet for
students to take notes on each situation. Hand these out to small
groups of students and have them assume and research the roles they are
given. Ideal for students in grades 7-9. Consider having students
dress up to play their roles, being sure to correct any misconceptions
that they present. The manifestations include sexism, environmental
degradation, lacking education, racism, and many more. Use these in
jigsaw activities or research presentations to show students what
creates poverty in people’s lives.
EXPERT SLIPS
Half-page
summaries that explain various perspectives on poverty and a worksheet
for students to take notes on each perspective. Hand these out to small
groups of students and have them become class experts in that
perspective by adding their own knowledge and interpretation to the
subject they are given or doing further research to become a true
expert. The slips will help students understand several of poverty's
causes and manifestations by detailing and demonstrating the challenges
specific impoverished groups face. The range of experts includes those
on economic, political, and human rights perspectives on poverty,
country-specific experts, and experts on specific development issues.
These slips can be used in jigsaw activities or research presentations
to introduce or elaborate on the variety of ways of thinking about
poverty.
COMING SOON - INQUIRY BASED WORKSHEETS
Worksheets that introduce a wide variety of development-related concepts by summarizing a range of sources from EPN and other organizations and adding several levels of questions. These questions have highlight key points of the summaries, ask students to consider the information and take a stance, and gives questions for further research, sometimes in the form of small projects. These worksheets were developed with consultants at the English Montreal School Board for Quebec’s 11th grade Contemporary World course, but were designed to be widely relevant and accessible.
